Drum Brakes vs Disc Brakes After a concise lecture from carMASTER Vic, i ve decided to check it out on the web also. The diagram shown above is a disc brake. What distinguishes the drum from her counterpart is that the latter uses a rotor and a calipers to stop the wheel rotation. For a disc brake, once the brake pedal is depressed, the brake fluid becomes the transmission medium and causes the brake pads housed within the calipers to compress and clamp the rotor. As such, the rotor wun move and the wheels dun move. The disc is also exposed to the environment, thus allowing heat to be dissipated as fast as it builds up. Essentially the working principles for a drum is also the same but for it, everything is housed within the a drum. The only bane for the drum lies in the fact that since everything is housed within, the heat buildup is slower to be releases into the environment and when the drum is overheated or saturated with heat, the braking power is lost and thus, loses its effectiveness. So whenever we look into cars, disc brakes are definitely better as they are more expensive! the basic principle in life...
