New Year, to me, means

a chance to stay up late and play mahjong without being chided by my parents.

a chance to grab some angbaos which progressively loses its monetary meaning as the year passes by. Hmm..perhaps as everyone becomes increasingly financial independent, the amount of money gained instead becomes statistically insignificant. However,as i grow older each year, getting the angbaos takes on a newer dimension for me. It constantly reminds me that year passes by very fast and in a flick of an eye, it will soon be my turn to give angbao. Through the years, i ve noticed how my cousins got promoted from being the recipients to the opposite side of the pasture.

If you ask me why a red packet, i see it as a blessing from the "seniors" of the family to the juniors. And when the turn comes to me, I think i will give regardless of the marital status. It should be actually propagated as a form of senior to junior thing i suppose. Fancy taking angbao at 30 or 35 certainly will make me feel shy(in time to come).

I believe CNY becomes increasingly happening and meaningful as we get attached. Its a time and opportunity, in a year, for me as a foreigner to the families of my other part to really know the culture and story embroiled within. Hmm..i must say i enjoy the CNY every year. Getting to know bei's cousins and uncles and aunties and vice versa for her. Hmm...it just makes us closer.I am beginning to treasure the short 15 days of the year where i see it as a step closer for both of us..heee....
